Six out of six RoSPA Gold Awards for health and safety!

2 May 2025

We are delighted to have been awarded six prestigious RoSPA Gold Awards for our continuous commitment to health and safety excellence.

The RoSPA Gold Award is the ultimate symbol of international excellence in recognising outstanding achievements and dedication to workplace safety. By earning a RoSPA Award, organisations receive recognition for their accomplishments and become part of a legacy that values dedication to high safety standards.

This year we entered six sites, and the results are as follows:

  • Bury Pre-Silo, Cantley and Newark remained at Gold
  • Wissington moved from Silver to Gold
  • Bury Customer Supply and Riverside received Gold at their first attempt

The standard of competition rises year-on-year, with each entry assessed against rigorous criteria so this achievement is a real testament to our teams’ efforts and high standards of safety demonstrated every day.

Pablo Puerta, Supply Chain Director at British Sugar comments: “Safety is our number one priority at British Sugar, and to receive recognition of our teams’ efforts and dedication to making our sites a safe place to work is testament to this. It underpins our core values and commitment to being a safe and healthy place to work, and I couldn’t be prouder of everyone.

“We have seen a real shift in safety behaviour by building ownership within every employee and creating a psychologically safe environment. Alongside focusing on operational discipline and clarity in safe behaviours at our highly complex manufacturing sites, we have been able to not only get the basics right but build upon these to ensure that safety is at the forefront of every activity and behaviour on site.”

Making it personal

At the heart of our RoSPA Award applications was British Sugar’s Personal Choices psychological safety programme, which challenges an individual’s own personal risk perceptions and builds an understanding of how we make choices at the point of risk. It has been rolled out at the four British Sugar factories (Bury St Edmunds, Cantley, Newark and Wissington), as well as Riverside. It is due to be rolled out at Bury Customer Supply later this year.

The programme improves safety culture by educating employees on the subconscious factors that influence their choices, such as personal risk perception, the balance between time and risk, ingrained habits and the disconnect between mind and body.

Early results show an improvement in both language and behaviour across all employees, a reduction in all types of injuries, and an increase in near-miss reporting.

Thank you to every British Sugar employee and contractor for playing your part in making our workplaces safer. Your dedication and commitment to maintaining the highest level of safety standards is truly commendable.
