2022/23 sugar beet campaign start dates announced

31 August 2022

As this year’s sugar beet harvest approaches, British Sugar is pleased to share details of the campaign dates for each factory.

The start dates for beet deliveries to British Sugar’s factories are:

Newark                       19th September

Wissington                   26th September

Bury St Edmunds          5th October

Cantley                       20th October

Sugar beet growers and industry partners have been advised of beet intake times at the factories by email and via our online portal My British Sugar.

Our Bury St Edmunds and Cantley factories are opening later than in previous years as a result of exceptional climatic conditions over the summer, with these areas receiving less rainfall than the Wissington and Newark factory areas. The later start dates will allow for greater yield improvement by leaving the crop in the ground longer, thereby hopefully benefitting from some much-needed rain.

East Anglian growers who are impacted and need to lift their crop before their contracted factory is open can deliver sugar beet to Wissington from 26th September. Any additional cost from this increased distance will be met by British Sugar.

As in previous years, we will provide growers and industry partners with regular communications as campaign progresses, including on factory performance and national crop updates. However, this year, stakeholders will have the opportunity to choose the information they wish to receive, and can update their preferences via My British Sugar.

Growers and industry partners can get in touch with their British Sugar Account Manager if they have any queries, at this stage or as campaign progresses.

We wish all growers, contractors, hauliers and partners across the British beet sugar industry partners all the very best for a safe and successful campaign this year.

Notes to editors:

Growers wishing to deliver beet to Wissington before their contacted factory is open must request this through their British Sugar Account Manager ahead of lifting, so that rates can be agreed with the haulier.
