National survey ranks British Sugar apprentice scheme at number 15

12 August 2016

A careers information website for school and college leavers has awarded British Sugar’s apprentice scheme 15th place in a nationwide survey of 100 UK companies.

The survey, conducted by AllAboutSchoolLeavers.co.uk, was based solely on the opinions of people currently on apprenticeships, school leaver programmes and sponsored degrees. British Sugar's 15th place put the company ahead of BMW, DHL, Jaguar Land Rover, Laing O'Rourke and EDF Energy. Mercedes-Benz led the pack at number one.

The awards are designed to help young people see which areas employers are excelling in and who can offer them the best opportunities. In total there were 29 categories, ranging from skills development to company culture, and the winners were decided by surveys completed by apprentices and school leaver trainees from 100 UK companies.

British Sugar also reached finalist status in two categories – Best Level of Support and Top Employer: Engineering. They were also ranked at number 12 out of 50 in the Top Advanced Apprenticeship Employers.

Lynda Grayson, Apprentice, Graduate and Recruitment Co-ordinator, said: "We are really proud of both our graduate and apprentice schemes. We invest a great deal of time and energy in identifying future talent for our business because we want to nurture and develop these young people to become our next business leaders. Being recognised in this way is extremely rewarding."

"We take on apprentices at each of our four factories on an annual basis and our locally targeted recruitment processes run between September and March. If anyone would like more information on the scheme please email me at Lynda.grayson@britishsugar.com"

The Industry judging panel included senior figures from the Association of Graduate Recruiters, the Chartered Institute of Builders, Skills for Health and Justice, the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural Skills, and the Institute of the Motor Industry.

British Sugar and the sugar industry

The home-grown sugar supply chain supports around 13,000 jobs; making it one of the country’s leading rural employers

One of the most efficient sugar industries in Europe, and competitive with leading global cane producers

The industry operates to high standards for environmental sustainability, and practices a ‘no waste’ culture

British Sugar operates 4 factories across East Anglia and the East Midlands employing almost 1,800 permanent and contract staff.

British Sugar sources sugar beet from over 3,500 farmers, supplying our four factories with around 7 million tonnes of sugar beet.

British Sugar has invested £300 million over the last 10 years to improve efficiency and competitiveness

Each year, British Sugar produces over 1 million tonnes of sugar plus a wide range of co-products

The British Sugar site in Wissington is the largest producer of natural Betaine in the world and began production in Bioethanol in September 2007, making it the first company to manufacture Bioethanol in the UK

British Sugar uses highly efficient Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology to generate electricity and heat energy

Our Cornerways nursery, situated nearby to the Wissington factory grows around 140 million tomatoes annually in the UK's largest single tomato glasshouse using the excess heat and CO2 generated by the CHP.

Each year, over 700,000 MWh of electricity is exported by British Sugar to the national grid network - that’s enough to power 220,000 homes

Over the past ten years, British Sugar has recruited and trained over 100 graduates and over 90 apprentices (four year apprenticeship programme, including support to gain recognised professional qualification).

British Sugar employs apprentices, graduates and experienced professionals for roles across the business and throughout the supply chain including engineers, accountants and project managers.

In April 2012, British Sugar’s commitment to Red Tractor Assurance was recognised by achieving Silver level equivalent with SAI Platform’s Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) 2.0 - demonstrating together with our growers, British Sugar are driving sustainable agriculture that promotes environmental protection.
