Celebrate Open Farm Sunday with British Sugar

3 June 2014

British Sugar is helping families celebrate British farming and food by supporting Open Farm Sunday at farms across the East of England on Sunday 8 June.

Open Farm Sunday is a fantastic way for everyone, young and old, to discover what it’s like to be a farmer, experience a working farm and learn about agriculture and food production. British Sugar staff will be on hand to explain how sugar beet is grown on the farms and the processes it goes through to become the white sugar on your table.

They’ll also be showing how they recycle as many of the products used in the process as possible. For instance, did you know that British Sugar uses the excess heat and carbon dioxide generated at its Wissington factory to produce home grown tomatoes at Cornerways, the single biggest glasshouse in the UK? Cornerways will be joining in with Open Farm Sunday and everyone visiting any of the locations below will have the chance to win some Cornerways tomatoes by entering a quick quiz on the British Sugar stand.

The company is supporting nine farms in the region at:

  • Goole Estate, Pasture Farm, Swinefleet, Goole in East Yorkshire
  • Sutton Estates, Hall Farm, Stainton le Vale, Market Rasen in Lincolnshire
  • MHS Farms Ltd, Sand Pit Road, Thorney, near Peterborough
  • Russell Smith Farms, College Farm, Grange Road, Duxford in Cambridgeshire
  • Cornerways Nursery, Wissington, Stoke Ferry in Norfolk
  • Holkham Estate, Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk
  • LF Papworth Ltd, Lodge Farm, Felmingham, North Walsham in Norfolk
  • Lewis Partners, Shotford Hall Farm, Harleston in Norfolk
  • James Chapman Farm, Clarkes Farm, Staithe Road, Martham in Great Yarmouth

As well as finding out about how their sugar is produced, families can also listen to birdsong, soak up the scenery and get hands on with farm life and the land that produces our food. Each location will be hosting its own activities, including farm walks, nature trails, tractor and trailer rides, farmer’s markets and picnics. It’s going to be a great day out, so why not come along and visit?
