Leading UK sugar manufacturer achieves higher BRC certification

All of British Sugar's six factories have now achieved higher level certification to the British Retail Consortium Global Standard for Food.

The certification scheme requires the food manufacturer to be audited against a defined set of criteria including: adoption and implementation of HACCP; a documented and effective quality management system and control of factory environmental standards, product, process and personnel - principles already incorporated in British Sugar's own management system.

The scheme is recognised throughout the food industry, providing a basis for ensuring that all food manufacturers adopt a common standard.

British Sugar's technical manager, Lindsay Mather said that certification is the recognised standard within the food industry for ensuring product safety and legality. She pointed out that the standard provides for certification at one of two levels - foundation and higher. "And," she added, "not only did the factories achieve certification, it was gained at the higher level and this is a wonderful tribute to all involved. Our major customers have acknowledged this significant achievement and been impressed by our commitment to meeting their requirements".
