Health and Wellbeing, the role of sugar

Food is an emotional issue and generates much political debate. Everyone has an opinion on what is 'good' for you about particular foods.

British Sugar is committed to putting sugar into perspective and explaining the role of sugar in a healthy balanced diet.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet along with taking regular exercise is key to physical and mental well-being. Scientists agree that we must consume a varied diet and not eat more than our bodies need.

Every activity from breathing to running requires energy. We get our energy from the nutrients in food. Carbohydrates, fats and protein are the three main nutrients (known as macronutrients) that provide energy in our diet.

Sugar is a natural carbohydrate that occurs mainly in plants. It forms a useful part of a normal, healthy balanced diet.

To this end, we support the UK Sugar Bureau which monitors international developments in nutritional science and provides an extensive repository of science-based data for journalists, health professionals and the public.

Workplace & Healthy Lifestyle

We fully support the Government's drive to support people to choose a healthy, balanced and enjoyable diet, and have signed up to the Department of Health's 'Public Health Responsibility Deal - Collective Pledge', to communicate and promote the Chief Medical Officer's revised physical activity guidelines.  We firmly believe we have a responsibility to promote workplace and healthy lifestyle information to our people, including health and wellbeing initiatives, provision of health checks, access to an Employee Assistance Programme, and participating in the Government's 'Cycle to Work' scheme to encourage more people to cycle to work rather than driving.
