British Sugar launches sustainability report



The report follows growing interest from British Sugar's customers in the business' approach to sustainability, including its integrated manufacturing process which allows it to maximise the use of raw materials. The report outlines key areas of British Sugar's activities and uses specific examples to illustrate its commitment to sustainability.

Among the highlights of the report are:
  • British Sugar is a major customer for farmers in eastern England. The average distance its sugar travels from farm to factory is 28 miles.
  • Since 1990 British Sugar has achieved a 25% reduction in the amount of energy it uses to produce a tonne of sugar.
  • British Sugar was the first manufacturer in the world to certify the carbon footprint of its granulated sugar using the new PAS 2050 method.
  • British Sugar uses its raw materials efficiently, producing a range of co-products, from animal feed to tomatoes.
  • British Sugar is fully committed to fair and consistent payment practices. It is a signatory of the Prompt Payment Code (PPC).

Sustainability by its very nature brings both challenges and opportunities to a business.  British Sugar will continue to drive efficiency and deliver solutions which benefit the environment, our stakeholders and the communities in which we operate.
