British Sugar and Air Liquide partner in Bioethanol CO2 liquefication capacity

British Sugar and Air Liquide have today announced their partnership in a new carbon dioxide recovery and liquefaction plant at British Sugar's Wissington factory, scheduled for commissioning in the summer of 2011.

The plant will be able to recover up to 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year from natural fermentation processes and will provide Wissington Bioethanol plant with a significant improvement in our Greenhouse Gas (GNG) rating.  This will result in our Wissington Bioethanol plant being one of the leading environmentally performing plants in the world.

British Sugar is internationally recognised as one of the most efficient and progressive sugar manfacturers in Europe, and this latest development supports our commitment to sustainable business investments and organic growth within our non-sugar co-product portfolio.  This partnership demonstrates how we effectively improve the use of our raw materials by using technology to develop new and exciting product stream opportunities.

British Sugar is delighted to partner with Air Liquide on this exciting project.  As leaders within our respective markets, we can guarantee the secure supply of carbon dioxide competitively whilst creating a revenue stream for 'green' carbon dioxide in the UK.

British Sugar become the first sugar manfacturer to calculate, certify and publish the carbon footprint of our sugar using the new PAS 2050 method.  We continue to be committed to reducing our environmental impact, wihch is encouraged and supported by the EU Renewable Energy Directive.
