The Story of Sugar

This document was originally produced by The Sugar Bureau in 1992 and revised and adapted to web format in December 2001.
When you think of sugar you probably imagine a bowl of sparkling white crystals.  We know sugar as the substance that sweetens food.  But have you ever wanted to know:

  • What sugar is?
  • Where does sugar come from?
  • What do we use it for?

The Story of Sugar is described in this series of pages.  It looks at the history, geography, technology and science of table sugar.  Suggestions are given in the Project Notes to help you put together your own project on sugar.
