Africa British Sugar holds a 51% stake in Illovo Sugar Limited, the largest cane sugar producer in Africa and one of the world's lowest cost producers
Illovo is the leading producer in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland and Tanzania and has a strong and growing presence in Mozambique. It produced 1.9 million tonnes of sugar in 2005/6 and has identified development programmes to expand this capacity substantially.

British Sugar Overseas (BSO) is responsible for British Sugar’s operations in Poland and China.
Poland BSO is one of the largest foreign investors in the Polish sugar industry..
The Glinojeck plant is now the largest sugar refinery in Poland, and the first to produce over 100,000 tonnes in a season in 2002. Glinojeck is also the location for BSO’s packaging plant for its Srebrna Lyzeczka retail brand.

China BSO’s involvement with China’s sugar industry began in 1995 with a joint venture in a cane sugar refinery in Guangxi Province, South East China.
The company now has majority control in four cane sugar factories in China processing nearly 4 million tonnes of cane and producing about 500,000 tonnes of sugar.
In 2007, BSO formed a new joint venture, BoTian Sugar Company Limited ("BoTian"), with the Hebei Tian Lu Sugar Group (“Tian Lu”). This JV initially owns and operates four beet sugar factories: Yi’an and Wangkai in Heilongjiang province, Zhangbei in Hebei province and Qianqi in Inner Mongolia. The JV has also taken over operation of 7 other mills across the region. Sugar production in these mills in 2006/07 was almost 250,000 tonnes.
